The Ofsted report into Chiltern Edge School highlights a number of serious issues which have inevitably worried parents about their children's education. Of even greater concern, however, is the double-whammy of alarming news of a consultation on the school's future.
I raised this case as a matter of urgency during a meeting with the Secretary of State for Education; following which I contacted the local authority and spoke with Henley MP John Howell. He shares my concerns and I will be engaging with him further in the days ahead.
In situations such as this, where a school has been rated inadequate and placed in special measures, the local authority has two options to consider:
1. that the schools is closed;
2. that the school is converted into sponsored academy.
I support the latter, as I would be deeply concerned about short-term capacity in Caversham to absorb hundreds of new secondary places. I do not intend to let the school close.
The views of parents have to be given absolute priority and the Local Authority will be holding an information evening at the school on Wednesday 3rd May at the school. I will try to be there to represent my constituents views, and to engage with, concerned parents.
I will continue to keep parents updated with any developments over the coming days.
I hope this is reassuring and demonstrates my engagement and concern.
