Whilst national media reports hype up splits and differences at Government level, it is sometimes easy to lose sight of all the excellent work that is going on which is already making a huge difference to people within local communities - not least in my Reading East constituency.
Of course I am delighted that there will be an in/out referendum on Europe in 2017 should the Conservative Party be re-elected to Government, but the exaggerated reports of the debate that took place did drown out some of the other positive news - not least on the economy.
Take education as one example. Despite massive opposition from Labour at Westminster in 2010, we pushed through school reforms to allow changes to be made that gave much greater power to parents in the setting up of new schools.
It seemed to me rather stupid that Local Education Authorities (LEAs) knew better than parents what was needed in their local community. Now the results of that legislation are beginning to show through. This week a group of parents in Caversham had their school 'The Heights' approved for opening in September 2014.
The school bears the distinct mark and character that its parent supporters wanted. They decided what they wanted and needed and took the hard work on to deliver it. This is no small undertaking and they should all be immensely proud of what they have already achieved.
Obviously when the two form entry primary school opens in September 2014 it will deliver a huge boost to educational options and quality to Caversham. I can imagine the huge pride and sense of satisfaction that parents will feel in delivering something of such benefit to children in the area.
Of course Caversham Heights has wanted a new school for some time, but parents never had the power to force the LEA to deliver it. There were always excuses, and goodness only knows what happened to all that section 106 money that the council gets given for school provision from housing developments in Caversham. It certainly didn't go on a new school. That's why the legislation taking the power away from LEAs and passing it to people was and is so important.
The bureaucratic block has been loosened and hopefully the Labour Party will now stop backing the education unions who also oppose free schools and start backing parents and high quality educational choices.
Enormous progress is being made by this Government and it is important that we focus on making the changes the country desperately needs.
